On the stage of the Rietavas Cultural Center – Radu Ratoi, an accordion virtuoso originally from Moldova, pulsating with energy and unbridled vitality.
Renowned for his originality, versatility, and virtuosity, R. Ratoi is a laureate of numerous prestigious accordion competitions, and perhaps the greatest recognition of his professional career came in the form of the Leonnie Sonning Music Prize—one of the most prestigious awards in Denmark. In his home country, he was awarded the “Master of Arts” title, presented to him by President Maia Sandu for his exceptional achievements. Performing as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles, and collaborating with various artists and orchestras, R. Ratoi gives concerts all over the world, captivating audiences with his musicality, technique, and charisma. The musician describes the accordion as “an instrument with almost limitless possibilities.” This is evident on stage as well—people who are already familiar with his style are always amazed by his unique playing style and feel for the instrument. According to the accordionist, his main goal is to prove to the world that the accordion is underappreciated and has incredible potential across all musical genres. Through his transcriptions of works by J. S. Bach, D. Scarlatti, J. P. Rameau, F. Liszt, and many other composers, he has rediscovered and expanded the accordion repertoire. R. Ratoi plays a “Pigini Nova – RR” accordion, which was specially crafted and customized for him.
