The Čiurlionis String Quartet—one of Lithuania’s most accomplished chamber ensembles—presents a rich program featuring works from the Romantic period to the 20th and 21st centuries. Their activity spans not only classical music but also collaborations with jazz and electronic artists. A major part of their mission is the promotion of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’ music abroad. The tireless ensemble constantly invites listeners to be inspired by the harmony of the classics together with the light aura of C major, which blurs the worries of the present.
This evening’s guest is baritone Tomas Kildišius, a Lithuanian singer who resides in Germany and is especially dedicated to vocal chamber music. In 2018, he received the Grand Prix at the Nadia and Lili Boulanger International Competition in Paris. Kildišius is praised for his artistic sensitivity and the expressiveness of his voice. He regularly performs across Germany, the Netherlands, and France and is a frequent interpreter of modern compositions, including works by Robert Holl and Wolfgang Abendroth. His debut CD features Johannes Brahms’ vocal cycle Die schöne Magelone. The talented performer is often praised in the media for his interpretative expression and impeccable pronunciation.
This diverse and emotionally layered program brings together M.K. Čiurlionis’s structurally rich works, Schubert’s lyrical Romanticism, a new work by Tamulionis, Sollima’s energetic journey through Italy, and Jonathan Dove’s “Who Wrote the Book of Love?” the ironic and modern look at love—a fitting end to this musical story.
The concert is organised in cooperation with Kaunas State Philharmonic and Kaunas District Municipality.
