Pažaislis Music Festival invites its guests to immerse in the world of French romance and enjoy colourful orchestrations and the sound of a royal mezzo-soprano. Dame Sarah Connolly, the world-famous singer who is coming to Lithuania for the first time, gained world fame with her interpretations of baroque music, which opened her the doors to the stages of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Metropolitan in New York, Royal Opera House in London, and the prestigious Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

Hailed as one of the best mezzo-sopranos in the world today, the singer often appears in concert halls to perform solo parts in long-form pieces and organise song evenings. Her performances are accompanied by the following critical acclaim: “Each time, her interpretation is deepened and expanded by some new tone of voice or nuance of phrasing. She captivates listeners with her warmth and strength.”

In this concert, to be dedicated exclusively to Lithuanian music lovers, Hector Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été (Summer Nights) song cycle, which is one of Dame Sarah Connolly’s favourite concert opuses, will be played alongside the charming Maurice Ravel’s Bolero performed by the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra and conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius. The cycle of six songs was forgotten for some time after its creation but later became one of the most frequently performed works by Hector Berlioz. Critics respond to Sarah Connolly’s interpretation as follows: “The performance was very intimate, and the singer enchanted with her story. The interpretation is intense but with a touch of class, with beautifully formed phrases, and sometimes full of seriousness. Not only the soloist’s attention to the text is surprising, but also the sense of colours given to the words.”

Edgaras Montvidas, Artistic Director of the Pažaislis Music Festival, who knows the famous singer personally, says: “I was immediately captivated by her chocolate-and-mature-cognac voice.” In addition to performing on stage, she is a highly visible activist concerned with the preservation of the English National Opera. It is no exaggeration to say that she has truly deserved the title of Dame, conferred by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. So, I invite you to a royal evening of music!”
