“There is something close to us, natural, instantly finding in our hearts a warm, compassionate response”, is how contemporaries of Edvard Grieg have described his music, which is imbued with an enchanting melancholy, reflecting the beauty of Norwegian nature, at once majestically broad and uplifting, at once grey, humble, pitiful, but always inexpressibly magical in the manner of a Northerner. To celebrate the anniversary of the outstanding Norwegian composer, the Kaunas String Quartet has prepared an extraordinary programme featuring Grieg’s only surviving and complete quartet for strings, as well as the composer’s most beautiful songs, arranged for mezzo-soprano and string quartet, which have been called the “voice of the soul”.
